Step 1: Set up.

  • Print out our free Manuka Messenger bag pattern. Make sure your printer is set to "Print actual size"

  • Measure the size box on the second page. these should be 5cm x 5cm or 2inches by 2 inches.

  • Tape pieces together, match circles and make sure you have consecutive numbers.

  • Cut the pattern paper out. There will be 4 pieces. Front, Back, Pocket and Strap.

  • The pattern pieces have how many pieces of each to cut written on them.

  • Place paper pieces on fabric. Follow the grain-line, it should run parallel to the selvage on the fabric.

See image on front page for pattern placement.

  • The strap is “cut two pieces”, as indicated by the grey colour on the pattern placement image.

Fold up the bottom of the fabric to make two layers and place pattern piece on.

  • Cut out around your paper pattern, be careful not to cut the paper pattern as this will blunt your scissors.

Step 2: Pocket preparation

  • Find the pocket pattern piece. You will see a rectangular shape on the pattern piece that indicates the size of the finished pocket. These lines will be folded to create the finished size of the pocket.

  • The top of the pocket has the widest line. We will first create a 1cm fold along the top of the pocket.

  • Then fold the top over again 5cm to align with the pattern markings.

  • Once pressed, sew along the folded seam edge.

  • Take note of the fold lines on either side of the pocket. Fold and iron 1.5cm on either side,. make sure it lines up straight and doesn't peek out the top.

  • Along the bottom piece of the pocket pattern piece you will see another line. Draw this line with chalk. We will NOT be ironing this line.
